Application Prospects of Duplex Steel 2205 in Desalination Engineering

As global freshwater resources become increasingly scarce, desalination technology is advancing rapidly as a key solution to water shortages. In desalination plants, critical components such as pipelines, pumps, valves, and heat exchangers are constantly exposed to highly saline seawater, demanding exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in the materials used.

2205 Duplex Stainless Steel (UNS S31803/S32205) is a ferrite-austenite duplex stainless steel with typical chemistry: Cr 22%, Ni 5%, Mo 3%, N 0.15%. Compared to austenitic grades like 31 6L, 2205 offers higher strength (yield strength ≥450MPa) and superior resistance to chloride pitting (PREN ≥34).

In reverse osmosis (RO) seawater desalination systems, 2205 duplex stainless steel is primarily used to manufacture: {1) high-pressure seawater pipelines; {2) booster pump casings and impellers; {3) energy recovery device components; {4) valves and pipe fittings. Actual operating data show that {5) duplex stainless steel components last over {6) years in seawater environments, delivering significantly better overall economic benefits than {7) 6L stainless steel.

Jiangsu HEA can provide 2205 duplex steel wire in Φ0.5-8mm specifications for manufacturing various fasteners, filter meshes, and welding materials, meeting the diverse needs of seawater desalination projects.
